Click here and start living the journey today. InstagramThe Rainbow Mountain Tour is one of Peru’s most iconic adventures and a must-see for any traveler. Departing from Cusco, this full-day experience includes a scenic hike through the spectacular Andes, where you’ll have the chance to spot wildlife such as eagles, caracara falcons, and herds of alpacas. The vibrant sandstone formations of Rainbow Mountain create a landscape unlike any other in the country, complemented by snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and sweeping valleys.
Your day begins with a 4:00am pick-up from your hotel in our private van, followed by a nourishing breakfast near the trailhead. The ascent takes approximately 1.5 hours along a high-Andean valley with constant views of glaciers. Upon reaching the top, take your time to enjoy the incredible colors of Rainbow Mountain before continuing on a 45-minute hike to the breathtaking Red Valley.
The return trail offers more panoramic views of glaciers and dramatic landscapes. After completing the trek (highest elevation: 5,100m / 16,732ft), enjoy a well-earned lunch before we drive back to Cusco, arriving around 5:00pm.
Please note: Horses can be hired for most of the route, except for the final 600 meters, which are too steep and must be walked. The approximate cost is 100 soles round-trip, and your guide can help negotiate the price.

Your Rainbow Mountain Tour begins with a 4:00am pick-up from your hotel. We drive for approximately 3 hours through the scenic South Valley toward the trailhead in Llacto (4,638m / 15,216 ft), passing ancient Inca agricultural terraces, traditional Andean villages, and towering mountain peaks.
Near our breakfast stop, you will see herds of alpacas and llamas grazing peacefully as the sun rises. After enjoying a nutritious breakfast, we continue for a short 5-minute drive to the trailhead. The hike starts along a beautiful stream with breathtaking views of Ausangate Mountain and its impressive glaciers. This area offers opportunities to engage with local Quechua families who continue to preserve their ancestral traditions, clothing, and language.
After approximately 1.5 hours of steady hiking, we reach the summit viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain (5,020m / 16,466 ft). Here, you will have time to enjoy the multicolored landscapes, take photos, and appreciate the incredible geological formations. We typically spend around 30 minutes at the top before continuing with a 45-minute walk across to the spectacular Red Valley.
Finally, we return to the trailhead and start our 3-hour drive back to Cusco, arriving at your hotel around 5:00pm.
Optional: Horses can be rented from local community members at the start of the trek.

The Rainbow Mountain Tour is considered a moderate to challenging hike due to the high altitude. The trail itself is not technical, but the elevation (over 5,000 m / 16,400 ft) can make the trek physically demanding.
The best time to do the Rainbow Mountain Tour is during the dry season, from May to October, when skies are clearer and trails are more stable. However, the tour operates year-round.
Yes. Spending at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco prior to the tour is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of altitude sickness and enjoy the experience comfortably.
Yes. Horses are available at the trailhead and can be rented directly from the local community (approximately 100 soles roundtrip). Note that the final steep section must be walked.
Essential items include warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, gloves, snacks, and at least 1 liter of water. A small daypack is recommended.
The tour typically lasts from 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. including transportation, meals, the ascent to Rainbow Mountain, and the detour to Red Valley.
