Your adventure begins early as your guide picks you up at 4:00 am from your hotel in Cusco for the private transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station.
(If you prefer to start in Ollantaytambo, pickup will be at 5:30 am.)
Before boarding the train, your guide will give you a box lunch to carry in your daypack. After a scenic 1 hour and 15 minutes train ride, you’ll disembark at the legendary KM 104, the official starting point of the trek (2,000 m / 6,560 ft). You’ll cross a suspension bridge over the Urubamba River, register with your passport at the checkpoint, and explore your first archaeological site of the day.
The hike starts with a gentle 1.5-hour ascent, offering several viewpoints overlooking the Urubamba River. As you enter diverse microclimates—including lush cloud forests—be prepared for mist or rain at any time of year. The next section becomes slightly steeper for another 1.5 hours, ending at a beautiful waterfall—perfect for photos.
Crossing the bridge below the falls, you’ll soon come face-to-face with the spectacular ruins of Wiñay Wayna (2,600 m / 8,500 ft). This impressive Inca site, partially reclaimed by the jungle, features terraces, temples, and dramatic views. Your guide will explain its fascinating history along with the rich flora and fauna of the region before a short 5-minute walk to your lunch spot.
Enjoy your fresh, gourmet picnic lunch surrounded by tropical flowers in the campsite area. Please inform us of any dietary needs or allergies at the time of booking.
After lunch, the trail continues with a mostly gradual path toward the Sun Gate. This one-hour section includes gentle ups and downs, finishing with the famous steep stone steps known as the “Gringo Killers.” Climbing these last steps brings you to the moment you’ve been waiting for—the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate. Take your time to savor the view and capture unforgettable photos.
From the Sun Gate to the citadel, you’ll pass several lesser-known archaeological sites. Enjoy the final approach as your guide shares insights about these remarkable structures.
Upon reaching Machu Picchu, you’ll enjoy additional photo opportunities from the upper terraces near the House of the Guardians, where the iconic postcard-view is taken. Because you arrive in the afternoon, the crowds have thinned, allowing for more relaxed exploration and better photography conditions.
Your guide will lead a 2-hour private tour, covering the most important temples, plazas, terraces, and the three distinct sectors of Machu Picchu: agricultural, urban, and religious.
After exploring, you’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes. At 6:20 pm, board the Expedition Train back to Ollantaytambo, where our private transport will return you to Cusco, arriving around 10:00 pm.
(Travelers upgrading to the Vistadome Train depart at 6:10 pm.)
Arrival Transfer: Private pickup from Cusco Airport to your hotel
