Your Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu begins early, with a 6:00 a.m. departure from your hotel toward the small Andean village of Tauca (3,750 m / 12,303 ft). This first section offers a gentle approach through fertile valleys cultivated with corn, quinoa, and native potatoes. As you ascend toward the pass at 4,050 m (13,287 ft), the landscape transitions into classic Andean puna, a high-altitude savannah covered with ichu grass.
From the top, enjoy stunning views of the Vilcabamba mountain range, including the snowcapped peaks of Veronica, Pitusiray, Chicon, and San Juan. After crossing the pass, begin your descent toward the plains leading to Huchuy Qosqo. The trail follows the scenic Cauca Ravine, where you will observe ancient archaeological remains, native flora such as tarwi, and impressive cacti fields still used by local communities.
Continue descending toward the Leon Punku gorge, where remnants of an Inca trail and stone bridge are still visible. This dramatic canyon, shaped by geological formations and towering rock walls, guides the river toward Huchuy Qosqo (3,650 m / 11,975 ft).
Upon arrival, explore this impressive archaeological complex, whose name means “Little Cusco” in Quechua. Highlights include a grand kallanka (ceremonial hall), residential and defensive structures, terraces, and rare two-story buildings constructed in stone and adobe. From its plateau, enjoy panoramic views of the Sacred Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges while your guide shares the site’s history and significance.
Later, hike downhill to Lamay (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where private transportation will take you to Ollantaytambo for dinner. Afterward, board the train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy free time to explore the town or relax after a rewarding day.
Today is the highlight of your Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu. After an early breakfast, board one of the first buses to Machu Picchu to witness the sunrise over this extraordinary Inca masterpiece. Your professional guide will lead a comprehensive two-hour tour, covering the most important areas of the citadel and explaining its division into agricultural, residential, and ceremonial sectors.
After the guided portion, take time to explore Machu Picchu on your own or opt for an additional hike to Huayna Picchu (pre-booking required; unguided). When you are ready, descend by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on your train schedule, you may have free time for shopping, visiting the museum, or enjoying the local hot springs.
In the afternoon, board the Expedition Train to Ollantaytambo at 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m., traveling alongside the scenic Urubamba River. Look up toward the mountains to catch a glimpse of Wiñay Wayna, one of the most beautiful sites on the Inca Trail. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, your private driver will pick you up and transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco, arriving around 7:00 p.m.
