Frequently Asked Questions – Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

How difficult is the Classic Inca Trail?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging. It includes several steep climbs, especially on Day 2 when crossing Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m). With good physical preparation and proper acclimatization in Cusco (2–3 days before the trek), most travelers complete it successfully.

Do I need a permit for the Inca Trail?

Yes. The Inca Trail is a protected area, and only 500 permits are issued per day (including guides and porters). That’s why it’s essential to book at least 5 months in advance — especially for travel between May and September, the high season.

What’s the best time of year to hike the Inca Trail?

The best months are April to October, during the dry season when trails are clearer and views are spectacular. The trail is closed in February for maintenance. Rainy season (November–March) offers lush scenery but can be slippery.

What type of accommodation is provided during the trek?

You’ll sleep in comfortable camping tents carried and set up by our team of porters. We provide sleeping mats, and sleeping bags are available for rent if needed. Campsites are authorized by the National Park authorities.

How big are the groups and who are the guides?

Groups are small — usually no more than 10 travelers — to ensure a personalized and safe experience. Our professional guides are certified, bilingual (English/Spanish), and passionate about Inca history and Andean culture.

What happens if I can’t finish the trek?

If you experience altitude sickness or any other issue, our guides will assist you immediately. We carry oxygen and first-aid kits, and there are emergency exit points along the route where you can safely return to Cusco by train.
